BJP Rules Out Leadership Change In Maharashtra After Lok Sabha Election Setback

BJP Rules Out Leadership Change In Maharashtra After Lok Sabha Election Setback

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday ruled out any change in its leadership in Maharashtra following the party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. This decision was made during the Maharashtra BJP’s core group meeting, attended by party president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“There will be no change in leadership in Maharashtra,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The meeting was attended by state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, senior leaders Sudhir Mungantiwar, Chadrakant Patil, Pankaja Munde, and Vinod Tawde, among others. The BJP secured nine seats in Maharashtra in the recent Lok Sabha elections, a major drop from its 2019 tally of 23 seats.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had offered to resign from the MahaYuti government of Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP to focus on strengthening the organisation for the upcoming September-October assembly elections. The BJP leadership, however, decided against any leadership changes.

During the briefing, Fadnvis stated that the leaders discussed the Lok Sabha election performance and outlined a blueprint for the forthcoming assembly polls. The BJP leaders also planned to engage with allies Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on their strategy for the assembly elections.

“Today, the Maharashtra core team had a meeting with the central leadership. We specifically discussed the results in Maharashtra. The difference between Mahayuti and MVA is just 0.3%, so we analysed where we lost votes, faced issues, and the corrective actions needed. Additionally, we planned our strategy for the Vidhan Sabha elections,” Fadnavis said.

BJP leaders from Jharkhand also attended a meeting in Delhi. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were appointed in charge of the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections in Jharkhand at the end of 2024, as confirmed by Jharkhand BJP President Babulal Marandi.
