Uttar Pradesh adds 950 MBBS and 271 PG seats to medical colleges for 2025-26 session
Uttar Pradesh MBBS seats: The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a major increase in the number of medical education seats for the 2025-26 academic session. A total of 950 new MBBS seats and 271 postgraduate (PG) seats will be added across government and private medical colleges in the state. This decision is expected to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure and provide more opportunities for students pursuing medical careers.According to media reports, the expansion is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to address doctor shortages and enhance medical training facilities. These new seats will help meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals in both urban and rural areas.Government and private colleges see increase in seatsA substantial portion of the MBBS seats will be added to private medical colleges, with 750 seats being allocated across 12 private institutions. In addition, 200 new MBBS seats will be introduced in three government-run medical colleges. Notably, the Autonomous State Medical College in Amethi will gain 100 seats, while the ESIC Medical Colleges in Noida and Varanasi will each receive 50 additional seats.As a result, the total number of MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh will reach nearly 12,800 for the upcoming academic year, with 5,450 in government colleges and 7,350 in private colleges.Postgraduate seats also expandedThe expansion is not limited to undergraduate courses. The state has also approved 271 additional MD and MS seats. Out of these, 233 seats will be in government colleges, while 38 seats will be offered at Narayan Medical College in Kanpur, a private institution.This will bring the total number of PG seats in Uttar Pradesh to 2,137 in government colleges and 2,160 in private colleges. The increase in PG seats is expected to provide greater opportunities for postgraduate medical education and improve the state’s capacity to meet the growing demand for specialists.Expansion strengthens healthcare infrastructureThe addition of new MBBS and PG seats is expected to play a key role in enhancing healthcare delivery in Uttar Pradesh. By expanding medical education opportunities, the state aims to increase the number of qualified doctors, addressing shortages and improving overall healthcare services.The move reflects the government’s long-term strategy to ensure that medical education is accessible to a wider pool of students, with a particular focus on rural and underserved areas.
