'Ram was out of his mind': Tamil poet Vairamuthi's remarks sparks row; anti-Hindu, says BJP

CHENNAI: Lyricist Vairamuthu sparked controversy with his remarks on Lord Ram, asserting that “Ram was out of his mind after he got separated from wife Sita.”Vairamuthu made the comments during a function organised by Kambar Kazhagam, recently, in Chennai, where he stated, “When Ram attacked Vaali from a hideout, Valmiki, Vaali and the entire world did not forgive him but poet Kamban (who translated Ramayana into Tamil) forgave Ram. Kamban said that Ram was out of his mind because of his separation from Sita and according to IPC section 84, a person who was out of his mind cannot be punishable. Kamban may not have known the law but he knew the society.”TN BJP president Nainar Nagenthran condemned the remarks of Vairamuthu calling it as “anti-Hindu”. He questioned why the DMK which preaches secularism did not oppose Vairamuthu for his remarks. The lyricist, who had previously ignited controversy by labeling Andal as a ‘devadasi’ a few years ago, has again found himself at the centre of debate due to his contentious remarks on Lord Ram.This is not the first instance of Lord Ram facing controversy in Tamil Nadu, as former chief minister M Karunanidhi also mocked Ram by asking “in which engineering college did Ram study” when the Ram Sethu project was announced.
