Hyundai Motor India transported 1,56,724 units using rail freight in 2024, reducing carbon emissions by 18,352 tonnes. The company dispatched all its vehicles to the North-East through rail. From 2021 to 2024, they sent 5,37,499 units, reducing emissions by 63,452 tonnes. Hyundai aims to continue using rail freight for long-term emission reductions.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off three new trains during his visit to Assam. He also inaugurated a road overbridge and a 10KW FM transmitter at Akashvani Kokrajhar, improving broadcast quality for over 30 lakh residents. Additionally, he inaugurated the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology from the railway station.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train touched a peak speed of 180 kmph in recent trials. The new sleeper variant, designed for long-distance travel, includes features like automatic doors, comfortable berths, and internet connectivity. The train trials will continue until the end of the month before being introduced for passenger travel, pending final safety assessments.
Trains Cancelled Today: Indian Railways has canceled at least 95 trains, including several Express and MEMU services, due to various reasons such as scheduled maintenance work. Passengers are advised to verify the latest train status on the National Train Enquiry System before arriving at the station. Partial cancellations are also reported for certain trains.

Kolkata Metro Railway is imposing a Rs 10 surcharge on each ticket for special night services along the New Garia-Dumdum stretch of the Blue Line, starting January 1, 2025. The surcharge will apply to services running after regular hours and was initially planned for December but postponed due to commuter backlash.
The Railways plans to operate 3,000 special trains for Maha Kumbh 2025, including 560 on ring rail routes. Around 560 ticketing points across nine stations and fair areas will facilitate ticket distribution, with a daily capacity of 10 lakh tickets. Additionally, enhanced security and medical facilities will be deployed to manage the huge influx of passengers.

In a significant breakthrough for the Udhampur-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, Indian Railways conducted trail runs at the Katra-Reasi section of the highly-anticipated project.The Katra-Reasi stretch, covering a challenging 111 kilometres, faced multiple interruptions during construction, necessitating the involvement of global experts. The Jammu–Baramulla railway line is a groundbreaking infrastructure project aimed at linking the Kashmir Valley in Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. Covering a distance of 338 kilometers, the railway line starts at Jammu and ends at Baramulla, passing through a range of difficult and varied landscapes. A key component of this initiative is the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which spans 272 kilometers, connecting Udhampur to Baramulla. This ambitious project is poised to revolutionize transportation in the region and enhance connectivity.
The New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge in Tamil Nadu, stands as a beacon of progress in Indian infrastructure, blending heritage with innovation. Designed to connect Rameswaram Island to the mainland, this 2.07-kilometre-long marvel of engineering marks a significant step toward modernising transportation in the region. Spanning the azure waters of the Palk Strait, the bridge links mainland India with the sacred town of Rameswaram, a pilgrimage hub revered by millions. For over a century, the old Pamban Bridge—India’s first sea bridge—stood as an emblem of innovation and resilience. The bridge’s vertical lift span, the first of its kind in India, is equipped with a fully automated electromechanical system. This system enables the navigational section to be elevated up to 17 meters, ensuring smooth and efficient maritime traffic. Combining modern engineering with functionality, the bridge seamlessly accommodates both road and maritime transport.
The Ahmedabad Railway division plans to launch 34 new train services to accommodate pilgrims ahead of the Mahakumbh. Additionally, the Uttar Pradesh government is preparing over 5,000 buses, including 550 electric ones, to manage the influx of devotees, with IRCTC ensuring top-notch facilities for all attendees.
Northeast Frontier Railway has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IRCON International Limited for maintaining electrification infrastructure. This includes Overhead Equipment (OHE) and Power Supply Installation (PSI) in the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions. Electrification in these divisions is progressing rapidly, and the MoU will help with scheduled maintenance and breakdown attention until June 2025.
The Indian Railways plans to adopt the public-private partnership (PPP) model for new projects to share the costs of large-scale infrastructure developments. This strategy aims to attract private investment, freeing government resources for other sectors, while a major capex boost is expected in the FY26 budget.
