Lucknow Super Giants found their form at the wrong time, defeating Gujarat Titans in their previous encounter by 33 runs, ending their four-match losing streak. Mitchell Marsh’s impressive maiden IPL ton (117) set the tone for the visitors, who raced to 235 for 2 in 20 overs.
Nicholas Pooran (56*) and Aiden Markram (36) played their roles perfectly in the high-scoring affair. The bowlers did a commendable job keeping their composure in the tense game when the Titans’ top five batters went on a rampage. Tall Kiwi pacer William O’Rourke, playing in only his 2nd game, took three wickets to turn the tide in favor of the Giants. Ultimately, they held the 2022 champions to 202 for 9.
With everything settled and no chance of advancing further, the Super Giants are aiming for a sixth-place finish. They currently sit 7th in the standings with 12 points. Digvesh Rathi, who served a one-match suspension, is available for the home game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Tuesday.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru were pursuing a massive run chase of 231 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, but things took a dramatic turn as they stumbled from 3 for 173 to being all out for 189, ultimately losing the game by 42 runs. Tim David, who injured his leg while fielding on the boundary early in the game, could not make an impact later with the bat because of his injury.
Taking the positives, openers Phil Salt (62) and Virat Kohli (43) provided a tremendous start, adding 80 runs in just 7 overs. After losing their top three, including Mayank Agarwal at a score of 129, Rajat Patidar (18) and stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma (24*) steadied the ship; however, a huge mix-up between them cost the wicket of the former in the 16th over.
Interestingly, they lost their final seven wickets for just 16 runs. With this loss, their chances of finishing in the top two took a slight hit; however, they shouldn’t be worried as they have a great opportunity to make up for that on Tuesday against the Super Giants. They will be boosted by the return of star pacer Josh Hazlewood, who is fit to participate for the remainder of the tournament.
The Challengers must win the game against the Super Giants to finish in the top two after nine long years.
