The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is currently underway, with all 10 teams having completed at least four or five games. With each game carrying crucial points, the competition for the top four spots remains intense. Teams will be looking for consistency and improving their net run rate (NRR) to stay in contention for the playoffs.
Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 59 off just 20 balls powered Sunrisers Hyderabad to a dominant six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants, effectively ending LSG’s hopes of making the IPL 2025 playoffs. Heinrich Klaasen also played a role with his 47-run knock, while contributions from Ishan Kishan and Kamindu Mendis further confirmed the win.
Lucknow Super Giants needed this win to stay alive in the tournament but struggled to maintain momentum after a bright start from their openers. Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram’s aggressive powerplay helped LSG at the start but they eventually lost momentum in the middle overs. Despite this, Rishabh Pant’s team managed to score 205/7. However, SRH’s batters stole the show and handed LSG a massive blow.
Now, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals are the only teams alive in the playoff race. Their match on 21 May has turned into a virtual quarterfinal. GT, PBKS, RCB have already confirmed their spots.
Here’s a look at the updated points table after the LSG vs SRH match:
Orange Cap: Sai Sudharsan (GT) — 617 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 156.99.
Purple Cap: Prasidh Krishna (GT) – 21 wickets in 12 innings at an economy of 7.85.
The final IPL 2024 league standings saw eventual champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) finish on top with 20 points from 14 matches, thanks to 9 wins, 3 losses, and 2 no-results. They were followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), both with 17 points, securing second and third positions respectively.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) completed a remarkable turnaround to clinch the fourth playoff spot. They won five matches in a row to finish with 14 points and edging out Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), all of whom also ended with 14 points but had inferior NRRs.
Gujarat Titans (GT) suffered due to two no-results and a poor NRR, finishing 8th with 12 points, while Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) rounded out the bottom two.
