Delhi-NCR gripped by H3N2 flu surge: Preventive steps everyone MUST follow

With common flu like symptoms, the H3N2 virus is spreading rapidly across Delhi and surrounding NCR cities as well. According to a recent health report by Local Circles survey, it shows a staggering increase from 50-70 percent households reporting at least one member falling ill with flu-like symptoms over the past few months in Delhi-NCR. While the flu may not be new, the current stage is definitely serious and needs urgent attention.

Understanding the virus

The H3N2 strain of the influenza is type A virus that rise in cases of several factors including post-monsoon waterlogging, fluctuating temperatures, increased outdoor strolls etc. Several hospitals and doctors are observing high number of patients with this virus strain, particularly people with respiratory problems, children and the elderly.

H3N2 influenza: Signs and symptoms to watch out for

Reports say the main culprit is the influenza for this significant jump, which is leading to prolonged fevers, hospitalization and even respiratory issues among individuals. A survey of 11,000 respondents across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, reported that one or more family member were currently sick or has been down with fever, cough and fatigue.

The survey found out that

  • 37% had at least four or more people sick
  • Another 32% had at least one to three members showing symptoms
  • Only 25% of the families said no one was unwell.

This marks a steep rise since March 2025, when only 54 per cent of households reported flu-like cases.

Why is this flu concerning

While most of these virus cases resolve on its own with proper rest and enough hydration, doctors still warn that this virus might hit children and the elderly more and some hospitals have even reported the cases of pneumonia, bronchitis and respiratory complications.

How to prevent the spread of H3N2 virus

Get vaccinated every yearFlu shots are first line of defense. They at least reduce the severity and the duration of the illness.

Spot symptoms early

  • Fever
  • dry or wet cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue and muscle aches
  • Chills
  • Vomiting and loose motions (occasional)

Use mask in crowded spaces

When travelling in public transport, going to markets, hospitals ensure to carry a mask, this is a simple way to prevent both catching and spreading respiratory viruses.

Maintain good hygiene

  • Use a hand sanitiser
  • Avoid touching the face with unwashed hands
  • Wash hands more often, at least with soap for 20 seconds.

Support the immune system

consume plenty of vegetables, take fluids, eat a protein rich diet and fermented food that work as probiotics.If you are feeling unwell, stay home and take care to avoid exposing others.
