Fadnavis, Shinde Take Oath With Winners As Maha MLAs At Special Assembly Session, Speaker Election On Dec 9

The newly elected candidates took oath as MLAs as the three-day special session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly began on Saturday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar took the oath of the MLA during the special session.

The three leaders were administered the oath as members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly by pro-tem speaker Kalidas Kolambkar soon after the proceedings of the House began at 11 am.

The pro-tem speaker also administered the oath of office to the rest of the 287 newly-elected MLAs.

The election for the new Assembly Speaker is likely to be held on Monday.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance maintained power in Maharashtra as it registered a resounding victory by winning 230 of the 288 assembly seats. The new government was sworn in on December 5 with Devendra Fadnavis returning as the chief minister while Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar took oath as deputy chief ministers.

Meanwhile, the cabinet expansion of the new Maharashtra government is likely to take place on December 11 and 12, according to a PTI report quoting sources.

The Ajit Pawar-led NCP is likely to remain in Finance while the BJP is expected to keep the Home Department as in the previous Eknath Shinde-led government, as per the report.

The Shinde-led Sena could retain Urban Development and might also get Revenue.

However, the final decision on the number of ministers who would take oath will be taken in a day or two, said a senior BJP leader, as per the report.

The winter session of the Assembly will begin in Nagpur, the state’s second capital, on December 16.
