Ciara opens up on Russell Wilson inspiring a dying boy to fight for life and beat cancer against odds | NFL News
When Grammy-winning artist Ciara opened up about her husband Russell Wilson’s philanthropy, she shared a deeply moving story that revealed the quarterback’s impact beyond the football field. During a recent appearance on Power 106 Los Angeles, the singer recalled how Wilson’s words convinced a teenager battling leukemia to pursue stem cell therapy—a choice that saved his life.

Ciara and Wilson, who co-founded the Why Not You Foundation in 2014, often stress the importance of inspiring hope in children facing adversity. “We’re so blessed that we get to do life together and we get to impact together and that’s one thing we love doing,” Ciara said. Their mission, she explained, is rooted in providing opportunities for kids to dream big and embrace resilience.
One of the most remarkable examples is Milton Wright, a 19-year-old who was losing his battle with cancer. According to Ciara, Wright had just twelve hours left to live and resisted continuing treatment. Wilson stepped in, sharing a personal story about losing his father, Harrison Wilson III, to diabetes complications in 2010. “Russ went in and talked to him and convinced him, ‘Hey, kid,’ told him his story about losing his father, everything. Before you know it, the kid changed his mind, got up and was like, ‘I want to do it,’” she recalled.
How Russell Wilson’s personal loss turned into hope for others
Wilson later wrote about the encounter in The Players’ Tribune, describing how he connected with Wright during his lowest moment. “When I sat by his bed and looked into his eyes, I could tell he had accepted the possibility of death. But he was really scared,” Wilson shared. The quarterback told Wright about his father’s battle, who kept fighting long past the doctors’ expectations. “So I told Milton to keep fighting like my dad did.”That conversation changed everything. Wright went on to complete the treatment, eventually entering remission, and later encouraged other young patients to give stem cell therapy a chance. For Ciara, the moment highlights the heart of their foundation’s work. “You talk about being able to be a part of saving someone’s life essentially, right? It’s such a gift,” she said. For the couple, it all circles back to the same philosophy they live by: Why Not You?
