Dismantling The Phenomenon Ofnfluencer, Tight Diet That Becomes A Trend On Social Media – VOI English

Dismantling The Phenomenon Ofnfluencer, Tight Diet That Becomes A Trend On Social Media – VOI English

Share:
JAKARTA – In recent years, social media has witnessed the emergence of a new phenomenon that is quite worrying, namely skinny influencer. This trend was echoed by Liv Schmidt, 23-year-old content creator. He went viral last year, because of his content about tips for being thin.
Reported by VOI from the USA Today page on Thursday, January 16, 2025, he is known for videos such as living climate in the city’ and Holiday Mealair Girl Guide. With uploads of Instagram accounts featuring slick photos in matching sports settings, practicing Pilates, and enjoying the nightlife in New York, Schmidt markets a slim body as an important part of being a it girl
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Schmidt revealed his ideology of reducing calorie intake and maintaining its content.
While most creators in the field of fitness and lifestyle avoid direct relationships between health and lean bodies, Schmidt actually built the platform by openly voicing this. He managed to gather hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok before being banned by TikTok in September.
In one of the outfit videos, he wrote, ‘Basic fit because the main accessories areSON hair and thin body.’ In another video, he added, ‘Please don’t ask how can I be thin if you’re not ready for the answer.’
Supporters say he only reveals the truth. But mental health experts warn that this kind of content can affect the young user’s perspective on body image and trigger unhealthy eating habits.
TikTok has finally banned Schmidt accounts for violating community guidelines, particularly those related to content promoting eating disorders and unhealthy body images. Even though it’s banned on TikTok, Schmidt is still active on Instagram, selling its exclusive content, posting dozens of new videos on YouTube with titles like badminton thunder … hello slim
TikTok has set guidelines for limiting content related to dangerous weight loss. However, many users are distorting this guideline, by posting content on an extreme diet with hashtags or videos of what do I eat everyday’, which often describes unhealthy calorie intake.
According to Lizzy Pope, a professor at the University of Vermont who researches the diet culture on social media, there are major changes in the way people talk about lean bodies.
“We are close to seeing the return of open talks about the desire to be thin, while previously many people were more focused on ‘wanting to be healthier, wanting to live a healthy life.’ I see language like this getting more and more accepted, “said Pope.
According to a University of Vermont study in 2022, the content about food, nutrition, and weight most watched on TikTok actually strengthens the toxic diet culture among adolescents and young adults.
Pope, who was also involved in the study, said that the representation of dietary culture and weight loss is often considered as part of a healthy life.
According to Pope, the main problem in following the advice of non-expert creators is that their advice often does not consider genetic factors and can be misleading in understanding how eating disorders develop. Eating disorders often arise gradually, not instantaneously.
Even though TikTok has banned it, Pope still warns that similar content will continue to appear on other platforms as long as the body is sleek as it is considered an indicator of social status and health.
Pope reminded parents to assume that their children will be exposed to content like this, and suggested proactively discussing diet topics and creating a home environment that emphasizes values other than physical appearance.
He also emphasized the importance of not making assumptions about a thin person’s body size, and reminded that problems arise when a person gives advice without medical support about how to be thin.
The best way to minimize content exposure like this is not to interact with these videos, because commenting or liking videos will actually make algorithms show similar content.
Pope also suggests working on rejecting this kind of content so that the toxic diet culture does not affect mental health, as well as seeking professional support such as therapists and nutritionists, if unhealthy thinking continues.

Gaza ceasefire deal latest: Israeli PM accuses Hamas of 'last-minute blackmail attempt' – as dozens reported dead in Gaza strikes – Sky News

Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Hamas of “blackmail” and says the Israeli cabinet will not meet to approve the ceasefire deal until the group agrees to all details. Meanwhile, Israel has continued to bombard Gaza, with medics saying dozens have been killed. Follow the latest.

Bezalel Smotrich says Israel is facing a “heartbreaking dilemma” with the ceasefire agreement.
The Israeli finance minister, a controversial far-right politician, said yesterday that the proposed deal with Hamas was “dangerous”, saying it took back “many achievements of the war”.
Posting on X this morning, Smotrich said Israel faced a choice between “the desire to see all the abductees returned to us and the fear of the heavy price of the deal and its implications”.
“I believe with all my heart that the majority of the public rejects the attempt to turn this discussion into a civil war of hatred and division,” he said.
“We must remember that both supporters of the deal and opponents want to see the hostages home and maintain the security of the State of Israel.”
At least 73 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire agreement was announced last night, according to the Hamas-run civil defence agency.
The agency’s spokesman Mahmoud Basal said: “Since the moment the ceasefire agreement was announced in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation forces have killed 73 martyrs, including 20 children and 25 women, and more than 230 wounded, and the Israeli occupation forces are still practicing the bombing policy until now.”
Israel disputes casualty figures coming from Hamas-run agencies in Gaza.
If agreed upon by both parties, the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas will see hostages set free, a withdrawal of IDF troops from parts of Gaza and a surge in humanitarian aid reaching those who desperately need it.
Details of what the agreement entails have been emerging since yesterday, when the initial news of the deal broke.
Here’s what we know so far.
It’s been more than a year since the last ceasefire deal collapsed.
In November 2023, a few weeks after the 7 October attacks, a deal was agreed after negotiations spearheaded and mediated by the US, Egypt and Qatar.
A near week-long pause in fighting allowed the release of nearly 80 Israeli hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, as well as the entry of more humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Both sides blamed each other for resuming hostilities on the day the agreement came to an end.
This morning’s claims from Israel that Hamas is backing out of the ceasefire deal shows how fragile this agreement is, says international correspondent Alex Rossi in Jerusalem.
The office of Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the group of a “last-minute blackmail attempt”, seemingly leaving the ceasefire agreement in limbo.
“We knew that this would be an enormously difficult deal for both sides – but perhaps not just how difficult as we are seeing this morning,” says Rossi.
He says the issues within the deal that Israel want to solve are unclear, but suggests they might be around which Palestinian prisoners Israel releases or a disagreement over the withdrawal of troops from Gaza.
“We wait to see exactly what the issues are, but I think it speaks really to just how complicated all of this and how delicate it all is,” Rossi adds.
“What’s difficult to decipher is whether this is just turbulence around the deal – or whether it is something much more serious.
“We should have a better idea of that in the hours to come.”
A senior Hamas official has appeared to push back on claims made by Benjamin Netanyahu suggesting that the group was reneging on some of the terms of the ceasefire deal.
Izzat el Reshiq said: “Hamas is committed to the ceasefire agreement, which was announced by the mediators.”
Last night, Qatar announced that a ceasefire deal had been agreed between Israel and Hamas, with a temporary pause in fighting to begin on Sunday.
Here’s what has happened since:
At present, it’s not clear what the next steps will be.
International correspondent Alex Rossi explains why some Israelis are protesting the ceasefire deal:
“Within Israel it is a divisive issue whether or not to bring about this ceasefire,” he says.
“I think to understand what you’re seeing happening in Jerusalem with that anti-ceasefire rally, you need to roll back to 7 October and understand the psychological impact that the Hamas attack had on this country.”
Rossi says there are many people “who think actually the job isn’t finished yet”.
He notes that Hamas has not been entirely obliterated, which means – in the protesters’ eyes – the war should continue.
“How divided Israeli society is is difficult to say. Certainly there is a huge body of pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu to bring about a conclusion to this war, which has raged now for many months and seen huge destruction across Gaza,” he says.
We’ve just had this statement from the Israeli prime minister’s office.
“Hamas is backing out of the explicit understandings agreed upon with the mediators and Israel in a last-minute blackmail attempt,” it says.
“Israel will not set a date for a cabinet and government meeting until the mediators announce that Hamas has approved all the details of the agreement.”
Israel’s cabinet was set to vote on the ceasefire deal later today.
