Omar Abdullah, vice president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), was sworn in as the new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday (16th October 2024). Soon after the ceremony, videos of Omar Abdullah’s 2009 and 2024 oath-taking went viral on social media, highlighting the change in the text of the oath after the abrogation of Article 370. In 2009, he swore by the ‘Constitution of the State,’ whereas in 2024, this was replaced with the ‘Constitution of India.’

This is Omar Abdullah’s second stint as the CM, but he is the first chief minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Three generations of the Abdullah family have led the region since Independence, first as the Prime Minister of J&K State in 1948, and then as a chief minister of the autonomous state, and now as the CM of a union territory stripped of its special status.

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah — The 1st Prime Minister Of Jammu And Kashmir
Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the grandfather of Omar Abdullah, was the first elected Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after its accession to India. He also founded the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference, which was later renamed the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.
Sheikh Abdullah served as the first elected Prime Minister of both the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir and Jammu & Kashmir State. He was the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir when it was an independent state from March 5, 1948 to October 31, 1951. He then became the first elected Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from October 1951 until August 1953, when he was dismissed from his position.
On August 8, 1953, Sheikh Abdullah was dismissed as Prime Minister by the then Sadr-i-Riyasat (Constitutional Head of State), Dr Karan Singh, son of Maharajah Hari Singh, on the grounds that he had lost the confidence of his cabinet. He was subsequently arrested and jailed for 11 years, accused of conspiring against the state. On April 8, 1964, the state government dropped all charges in the Kashmir conspiracy case, leading to his release and return to Srinagar.
Sheikh Abdullah returned to power as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir following an accord with Indira Gandhi in 1974. He held this position until his death on September 8, 1982.

Farooq Abdullah — Son Of CM To CM, Rise Of Militancy & Exodus Of Kashmiri Pandits
Farooq Abdullah, Sheikh Abdullah’s son and Omar Abdullah’s father, has served as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on several occasions since 1982. He is currently the president of JKNC, the party founded by his father, and was appointed its president in August 1981.
First Stint: September 1982 To July 1984
After his father’s death in 1982, Farooq Abdullah became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. However, in 1984, a faction of the National Conference led by his brother-in-law, Ghulam Mohammad Shah, broke away, leading to the collapse of his government and his eventual dismissal.
Second Stint: November 1986 To January 1990
In 1986, following the dismissal of Ghulam Mohammad Shah’s government after the communal riots in South Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah returned to office, leading a National Conference-Congress coalition. This period was marked by political turmoil, including allegations of election rigging in 1987 and the rise of militancy in the state. It was during his tenure that the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley occurred. In 1990, Farooq Abdullah resigned, and the state assembly was dissolved. He subsequently moved to the United Kingdom.
Third Stint: October 1996 To October 2002
Farooq Abdullah returned to India and, after winning the 1996 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, was once again sworn in as CM, marking his fifth term in office. His government completed a full six-year term.
Omar Abdullah — The First CM Of The Union Territory Of Jammu And Kashmir
Omar Abdullah, currently serving as the chief minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, previously held the position from 2009 to 2015. He has been the vice president of JKNC since 2009. In January 2009, Omar Abdullah became the youngest and 11th chief minister of J&K, leading a coalition government with the Congress. He served in that role until January 2015, after his tenure ended in December 2014 and the state saw its last Assembly elections before the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
After the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election, Abdullah’s JKNC and its allies secured 49 seats, leading to his nomination as the first chief minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
