Eid-al-adha, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, began on the evening of Sunday, June 16, 2024. Known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid-al-adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to Allah. According to Islamic tradition, Allah intervened and provided a ram to sacrifice instead, sparing Ishmael.
This festival is marked by various rituals, starting with a special prayer called Eid Salah, performed in mosques or open areas with the congregation facing Mecca. A central aspect of the celebration is the sacrificial offering of an animal, typically a goat or sheep, symbolising Ibrahim’s devotion and faith. The meat from the sacrifice is divided into three parts: one for the family, one for friends and relatives, and one for the less fortunate.
When Is Eid-Al-Adha Celebrated?
Eid-al-adha is not observed on a fixed date but is based on the sighting of the moon. It typically begins first in Gulf regions and is followed by celebrations in South Asia and other parts of the world. Muslims worldwide use this occasion to reflect on their faith, strengthen their character, and renew their commitment to religious principles.
The festival serves as a time for community bonding, charity, and remembrance of Ibrahim’s ultimate act of faith, underscoring the themes of sacrifice and devotion that are central to the celebration.
